Adolescent Sexuality and Media Study
Prevention Research Center, Berkeley, CA

PRS conducted a three-year longitudinal study with 1,105 children recruited at the ages of 12 through 16 to examine the impact of media – and especially TV series and day-time TV shows - in shaping attitudes and behaviors regarding sexuality.  In the second wave, PRS conducted 576 Computer Assisted Self-administered Interviews (CAPI) in 9 Bay Area counties as well as 527 interviews in Los Angeles.  The CAPI is administered by trained field staff as a 60-minute laptop interview at the participant’s home.  A parent of the child or adolescent is asked to complete a 20-minute self-administered questionnaire to be filled out at the same time.  The overall response between waves of data collection averaged over 92%.

Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBSS)
Santa Clara County Public Health Department, San Jose, CA

In a two-step approach, PRS conducted focus groups to determine the validity and reliability of a Spanish translation of the Center for Disease Control Behavioral Risk Factor Survey (BRFS).  Foreign-born native Spanish speaking students were enrolled to assist in the evaluation of the proposed translation, eliminating confusing, offensive or unclear Spanish phrasing.  Subsequently, PRS conducted in-school surveys of 7,500 English and Spanish speaking middle and high school students in 29 schools throughout the county using a two-pronged cluster sample design.  PRS was responsible for contacting school administrators to arrange surveying schedules and to coordinate the process of obtaining parental consent.
